On the Matter of the "Celestials":
On the Nature of that Magic which is practised by CELESTIALS; its origin, and source:
The following Findings of Fact entered into the record before arguments began, by the Lord Accuser Silvan Mercos of Kelkheim:
- That Celestial Magic is known to be innate to the Celestial, and not Apart, as a Ritualist from their Bones.
- That Celestial Magic is known to be tied to the Esoteric Realms of Energy, and not to the Alchemical Forms.
- That not every Celestial is yet a practitioner of their Magic, but may yet abstain from its use, or be devoid of natural tie.
- That a Celestial Practitioner of their innate Magic may yet subject themselves to the Soul Scarring which enables them to Practice Ritualism, in addition to the Ways of Celestial Magic.
- Bishop Viklos of Gaunt and the Athral Isle described the magic used by Celestials as per a report from Brother Jered Cook of Harn: He posited that it is the very innate nature of the Celestial Magic, considering its kinship to the Energies manipulated by Ritualism, which makes the Celestial specifically dangerous, and a Threat. Further, this nature described them as like unto magical artefacts, perhaps even constructs, though he did not speculate as to what hand might have fasioned them. In evidence for this, he submitted that each Celestial who practices Magic is attuned to either one or two magical realms identifiable by the Throne's Ritualists. He posited that Celestial Magic must not be allowed to flourish un-checked and Unlicensed, so much as Ritualism, at the very least. In Conclusion, he proposed that all Celestials, should they wish to practise their magic, must do so explicitly under the Auspices of the Throne, else refrain from such practice within the boundaries of all Throne-allied Nations, specifically the Principalities, the Athral Isle, and Gaunt. He suggested that the punishment for the violation of this should be imprisonment, or destruction, as per Homunculi.
- (brief uproar, wherein one of the CELESTIALS of Marath Suvla loudly threatened to show his Eminence of Gaunt the Power of the Realms in a most unorthodox manner. She was quickly calmed by her companions, and Prince-Bishop Tewdar restored order swiftly.)
- Sister Mercea of Tionna, with the blessing of Sigrid von Enghien, gave the following statement: "Serving the Throne as one of the few with a Writ allowing me to practice Ritualism in Honor of the Throne, I wish to consider the Celestials. They have unexpected magics, which surely the Throne sent them in order that they may serve the Glory of the Throne, and may better the world by using their magics to serve the will of the Throne. They may, I feel, be saints and heroes, who once served the Throne so well that they were allowed to rest in the “Manse” they speak of, before the Throne had need of their talents again. Indeed, I feel inspired by the word of the Throne; I am certain that these Celestials served the Throne once in such honor and righteousness that they were given brief reprieve from the hardships in the world, and now are gifted with such talents that they may serve the Throne again in this incarnation. For all things, surely, are created by the Throne’s will, and who are we to question such gifts as the Throne gives each of us, in any incarnation? Yet if the Celestials, as they call themselves, do not use their magics for the good of the Throne, do not follow its will in their work and their casting, they do great disservice to their creator; just as any of us should use our given powers in exaltation of the Throne. Should they turn from the word of the Throne, however, then they should be hunted down to serve penance for their rejection of the Throne's gifts."
- Brother Elvin Preminger recited the following from a letter of Gaius Calderus Isiqus, one of the RETURNED of Marath Suvla: "It is important to note that the other principle difference between a descended Celestial and a human is that they have the ability to touch, however softly, the essence of creation, and channel it toward their purpose in the form of magic. This magic is unlike that of ritualism, for it requires no bones, or scrolls or even foci. It is also unlike alchemy, in that it deals with the realms of energy, rather than the forms of matter. It is a facet of their very nature. Not all of them manifest the ability to use these ties offensively, but each and every one of them has a bond to one (or rarely two) realms."
- The CELESTIAL Adiola, Descended of the Hulder, spoke briefly of her magic, of the Realms of Fire and Storm. She delivered an impassioned defense of their practice of Celestial Magic, describing the ways in which it has been "much diminished" since their Descent; the limits and scope of it being entirely Knowable, whereas Ritualism is capable of any number of as-yet unknowable Things. She stressed that the presence of innate magic was not, in itself, a thing that classed them with Homunculi (see also below testimony), but a gift of their creation. She further expressed the desire to use this magic to further the cause of Unity, but stressed the importance of Free Will, as a concept, to all of her brethren.
- Brother Kidav Trent of Western Trempa reserved the majority of his remarks, but reiterated the Fact that Celestials may scar their souls, which Homunculi cannot do, and therefore must have souls to scar. While it is a sin to inflict scars on the soul, it follows that Celestials must therefore be capable of sin, which, necessarily, Homunculi are not.
- Mother Rosaura of Trofeu, called upon to speak, deferred her remarks.
- (a number of discussions and deliberations followed, which the Reporter was unable to discern in specific. His Holy Highness Prince-Bishop Tewdar von Brezha called for the next topic.)
On the Origin of CELESTIALS, and their true and proper place in the cosmos, in the cycle of reincarnation, and before the THRONE.
The following Findings of Fact entered into the record before arguments began, by the Lord Accuser Silvan Mercos of Kelkheim:
- That Celestials claim to have Descended from a Realm they refer to as "Heaven"
- That Celestials claim their ruler to be known as "The Light of Heaven," "The Divine Light," and "The Light in Heaven,"
- That for the purposes of this discussion, this entity should not be considered in conjunction as related to the heretical text, "On The Light of Heaven", which, by virtue of being proscribed, cannot be considered as a relevant text herein, nor its words fit evidence for public deliberation. Any relevant content in the proscribed text, or insight there provided, will be the sole province of the Left Hand of the Throne, and presented by Accuser Eliza Gollpfur.
- To begin, Brother Elvin Preminger recited the following from the letter of Gaius Calderus Isiqus: "Regarding the Celestial Chorus - The people of Ton Isiq knew of the Celestial Chorus even before they took mortal form during the Great War Against the Shadow. We had a means of contacting them in the realm to which they are native, a realm which is just as real as our own (and in a fashion could be thought to overlap our realm) but is imperceptible without powerful magics on one or both sides of the divide."
- (This argument makes a substantial impression on the assembly; there is a brief digression)
- Brother Kidav Trent of Western Trempa offers a treatise on the nature of the Human contrasted with the Celestial, based on his time with certain Celestials who have found service with Knights who favor the philosophy of the Ivory Sun. The thesis of his argument being that the philosophical bent of these Celestials seems largely in harmony with such philosophy, and as such, is not necessarily in conflict with the Wisdom of the Throne.
- Brother Nikol Morhul of Tarsikka related the following, from a Tarsikkan folk tale called The Army of Spoken Tales: "...Across the skin of all of them were letters, looking like beautiful handwritten script. The letters appeared to shimmer, some of them looking gold, some of them silver, others still bronze or copper."
- (Brief interlude, some murmurs of agreement and concern along these lines, Celestial Delegates calmed for a second time.)
- Bishop Viklos of Gaunt quoted a report from Brother Jered Cook of Harn that a number of Celestials have joined the rebellion in Athral Isle, weakening the unity of the people there, and disrupting the lawful and holy dominion of the Throne-blessed King. This underscored the previous point of Brother Nikol Morhul.
- (There is some unpleasant discourse begun after this statement, but it is perused no further, by the Word of the Patriarch.)
- Matron Teora Kichernman of the Skattenmark offered the following: "Clearly, the Divine Wisdom of the Throne sent Celestials as both a boon and a test -- but the Throne knew what it was doing when it sent these beings to aid the world. But as a test, we much be vigilant, since, like unformed clay and unforged metal, Choice has the potential for great good or great evil."
- Accuser Frieda Solder spoke to introduce the delegation of CELESTIALS from Marath Suvla. She expresses regret that those Celestials she has personally Questioned and found Honest are not present, as they are assisting Brothers of the Left Hand Order of the Reclamation in their present mission, in the wilderness. She vouches for the consistency and thoroughness of their claims as far as origin, purpose, and mission are concerned, and reiterates that she has, at this point, found no lie in them.
- The CELESTIAL Savarel of Marath Suvla briefly sketched a portrait of the "Celestial Manse," and opened up his time to questions from the Assembly. He responded to Brother Kidav Trent's question as to whether the "Light of Heaven" and the Redwood Throne might be the same thing with uncertainty, saying he did not know enough of the Faith as it is practised by humans to make a judgment on this point; nor had he direct contact with this entity, saying instead that he and all his kind, "felt his presence at all times." He further detailed the hierarchy of the CELESTIALS, the details of which to be recorded by the Scribe of the Throne in a separate treatise. Lastly, he rose the topic of the threat of the creatures called the Fallen, apparently CELESTIALS which have given over their Will to the Enemy called the Most Foul, and shared an image called the Mark of the Fallen with the Assembly, to be published widely.
- (Savarel's remarks are affirmed by the other CELESTIALS in his retinue, and Accuser Solder confirmed the consistency of this report with those she has received in formal Question, though she admitted to not having Questioned on the subject of the Fallen.)
- The CELESTIAL Zyrial of Marath Suvla echoed the words of Savarel, and particularly stressed the threat of the Fallen and the Most Foul. To quote, "I have chosen to place myself before this Diet and the Redwood Throne, to ask to be allowed to aid you in any way that I can. It is my duty to my people, to the world, and to the Light in Heaven that I bring comfort and succor to all who oppose the Most Foul. I humbly request that I be allowed to serve my purpose." His statement was subequesntly published.
- (A recess called while His Holiness the Patriarch, the present Heads of the Monastic Orders (and Matron Teora Kitchernmann, in the place of the venerable Senior Bannerman Toreld Kimneir, not present due to illness), His Highness Prince Caspar (along with his guard, Nicholas Vogler), and the Lady Accuser Eliza Gollpfur retired to deliberate, this lasting one-half hour.)
- HIS HOLINESS the PATRIARCH here Decreed that an item be added to the Deliberation, to address the topic of the Threat of the Most Foul and the Fallen. The Throne Scribe so amended the Agenda; all discussion on that point was tabled until that time. Quote: "The Bravery and Valour of these beings in descending, for whatever purpose, is not here in question, but rather their nature and being. As the dire subject they repeatedly invoke is, however, of great weight, it shall necessarily be discussed in due course."
- The RETURNED Stefan Angelus of the Targovishte presents a document obtained under unusual circumstances which appears to relate to the Celestials. He is thanked for this by His Holiness the Patriarch, and the text is remanded to the Throne Scribe for Publication.
- (no further substantial arguments presented. His Holy Highness Prince-Bishop Tewdar von Brezha called for the next topic.)
On the Matter of the "Returned"
On the Nature of RETURNED, and their place in the cycle of Reincarnation.
The following Findings of Fact entered into the record before arguments began, by Accuser Silvan Mercos of Kelkheim:
- That RETURNED have been proven to, indeed, have lived the lives and be the figures that they claim to be, as Verified by the Left Hand.
- Brother Elvin Preminger delivered from a treatise by "The Penitent Scribe," which discusses the Problem of the Returned from several angles. Much of this document reserved for further discussion; the full text of the document is formally Published.
- Brother Elvin Preminger recited the following from the letter of Gaius Calderus Isiqus: "Regarding "the returned," also called "The Hallowed Dead": The return of the heroes of old from behind the grave had never been heard of during the time before my death, and if the people that I have interacted with since my return are knowledgeable and trustworthy, I must conclude that such was also unheard of in the time after my death."
- Brother Elvin Preminger recited a letter from Khavar al-Qalam, one of the RETURNED, Offering his services for future correspondence with the Hierarchy of the Throne, for matters related to the subject. This information remanded to the Lady Accuser Eliza Gollpfur for Consideration.
- Bishop Viklos of Gaunt delivered a treatise by Sister Conna of the Silver Perch Sept of Gaunt, which describes the Return as, perhaps, a singular instance of Reincarnation, a literal return-incarnation of honored ancestors, in the Gauntish sense, to the living, that they may experience life in the Grace of the Throne's Era, and participate in the Holy Cycle thusly.
- The RETURNED Loizanan don Luzo, late of Mazhan and Vastervik, spoke at the behest of the Bishop of Gaunt, to the opportunity presented him now, to Serve once more, as he Served the Paladin Queen of Mazhan. He expresses his desire to render this service unto the Church, that he may resume as best he can his former office in this new and unfamiliar world.
- The Patriarch expressed his thanks and appreciation for this sentiment.
- Accuser Frieda Solder spoke again to introduce the RETURNED from Marath Suvla. She affirmed that she has also Questioned RETURNED now in the Service of the Order of the Reclamation, and noted that this order in particular, while distinctly a Religious order subject to the Left Hand, seems to have had an earlier incarnation in the First Age, and that she, personally, has spoken with several of its Ancient members. She likewise vouched for the consistency and thoroughness of their claims as far as origin, purpose, and mission are concerned, and reiterated that she has, at this point, found no lie in them on these points. She also verified that Gaius Calderus Isiqus and Khavar al-Qalam are known to have made their Return in Marath Suvla.
- The RETURNED Stefan Angelus of the Targovishte re-Introduces himself, the main of his remarks are reserved for the discussion of the Most Foul.
- Sister Evangeline of the Mendicants of Duren delivered a statement reminding the Assembly of our holy duty to enforce Unity through the cessation of Conflict, and as such, to refrain from judging the Returned (or indeed the Celestials) save as individuals. To Quote: "On the matter of the Returned, I can only tell you what I have seen. As a chiurgeon, I can attest that their flesh is the same as ours, and they are healed and harmed just as any mortal is. I could theorize that the Returned were removed from the cycle of resurrection, but in truth, I do not know. They come from a time and place before the Revelation, but those I have met are, in morality just as in body, as similar and as different as we are. Similarly, the Celestials I have met have had bodies indistinguishable from those of you or I. The Returned and Celestials I have met in Marath Sulva have acted as selflessly as any other townspeople, contributing to the protection and welfare of their neighbors, even laying down their lives to save mortals. They have contributed to the strength, health and safety of their community, just as certainly as humans have displayed these same virtues." This Statement published formally.
- Father Viktor of Duren enforced and approved the statements of Sister Evangeline, citing her good work in establishing an Almshouse in Marath Suvla, a beacon of light in the wilderness.
- Mother Rosaura of Trofeu issued a warning against re-interpeting the definition of Reincarnation too radically; citing over a thousand years of Canon on the topic of Reincarnation as sacred precedent.
- Sister Anitra of Potten reiterates excerpts from the treatise of the Penitent Scribe and also Sister Conna, suggesting that while "Reincarnation" may be the wrong term, is it not possible for the Throne to restore particularly Virtuous Pagans to life, that they may through their own volition come to the Throne in the current time?
- (There is much discussion on this point, all at once. At a sign from the Patriarch, His Holy Highness Prince-Bishop Tewdar von Brezha called for the next topic.)
On the Implications of the RETURNED for our understanding of the Cosmos.
The following Findings of Fact entered into the record before arguments began, by Accuser Silvan Mercos of Kelkheim:
- That Returned claim to have Returned from a Realm they refer to as "The Grim Prison," whence they were sent after death. For the sake of deliberation, this Realm shall be assumed to exist, though no further conclusion or assumption may be drawn from this.
- Races other than Human have been speculated, but none confirmed to reside there by any verified account.
- The lack of Children present in the "Grim Prison" has been marked by more than one verified account.
- Brother Elvin Preminger recited the following from the letter of Gaius Calderus Isiqus: "As for what we "returned" and/or The Celestials mean with respect to the tenets of your faith I cannot say. Until I had returned to life, I had never even heard of it. Since then I have read a little about it, and have seen the profound positive effect it can have on its adherents (as an example, Sister Evangeline is the most kind, humble and selfless person I have met in this era, and she is a credit to your faith)" In addition, the description of the Grim Prison provided in the Letter was read.
- Brother Elvin Preminger delivered the main of the treatise by "The Penitent Scribe," describing the realm of the Grim Prison in as much detail, and quite closely to the account of Gaius Calderus Isiqus.
-
(The remainder of the debate largely centered around points raised by the treatise of the Penitent Scribe, which we will summarize in this context:)
- The testimony of the "Auvet" and the "Celestial Primarch" was brought into question. The Lady Accuser Frieda Solder confirmed that these beings do, in fact, exist, though she had not personally spoken with them. Sister Evangeline of Duren confirmed having spoken to the Auvet; the Celestials each confirmed the existence of Primarchs. The existence of each is entered into the record as a Fact.
- It is noted that there has never been a formal canon ruling on the admissibility of the testimony of Supernatural Beings in Doctrinal Deliberations. Therefore, these elements of the treatise are to be considered as statements of opinion, rather than given the weight of theological evidence.
- The various cultural references to the Grim Prison are duly noted. Given their rarity, the subject is slotted for further research by Throne Scholars.
- The following possible interpretations are discarded as in conflict with the Findings of Fact as accepted by the Diet: An Intentional Untruth, an Unintentional Untruth.
- The following possible interpretations are discussed at length: A Necessary Device Created to Solve Other Problems, A Malevolent Device Created to Harm Mortal Souls. The purpose of the labor in the prison, it is decided, seems outside the scope of this deliberation, save for the question of whether this Prison be the Creation of the Throne or no. It is posited that as the Throne is the arbiter of the Reincarnation of souls, one way or the other, it likely that any repository of the dead is either the direct province of the Throne, or else a mighty undertaking of a hitherto unknown or unnamed Enemy, or the leftover creation of the Most Foul, perhaps now weakened since the Revelation of the Throne. These positions predominate and inform further discussion.
- The idea of whether this Grim Prison, if the Creation of the Throne, is either the holding place for the dead prior to the Revelation, or a necessary step in the cycle of Reincarnation is discussed at length. The statements of the "Primarch" and the "Auvet" are not considered binding in this, per the first stipulation in the discussion; thus any supposition on whether the dead still go there or not is considered just that: supposition. It is posed that whether the dead still go there or not is immaterial; the pre-Revelation Dead might still, potentially, be denied the Grace of Reincarnation due to their ancient status. It is certainly true that the figures now incarnate are many of the Greatest Heroes of their age, who fought the forces of the ancient enemy directly. The idea that this is somehow a divine gift, or else a divine test, dominates the discussion.
- The Patriarch considered the various arguments carefully, then declared the discussion complete. His Holy Highness Prince-Bishop Tewdar von Brezha called for the next topic.
On the Imminent Danger of the Most Foul, Fallen, and other Servants
This matter added for immediate consideration, given the testimonies of the Delegation from Marath Suvla, and others.
-
Brother Elvin Preminger recited the following from the letter of Gaius Calderus Isiqus: "Members of the Chorus are, for all intents and purposes immortal in their home realm. Despite this they have spent the entirety of their existence fighting against The Shadow in massive battles... That said, each member of the chorus has the ability to take mortal form. They do not do this lightly, for the choice to become mortal is, for all intents and purposes, irrevocable. You read that correctly - they voluntarily chose to sacrifice their immortality permanently in order to render aid to the denizens of our realm. During the Great War, a large number of these beings of light did just that, and as I understand it their aid was one of the factors allowing for the defeat of the Most Foul.
"Now again, in this modern time, more members of the chorus have given up the gift of immortality to stand alongside mortals and render aid in the time of troubles which surely must be on the horizon...
"Finally, I would be remiss if I did not point out the fact that, as mortal beings, and beings possessed of Free will, it is possible that a member of the chorus can be turned away from service to the Light. There were stories during the Great War of turncoat Celestials, who aided the Most Foul, using their innate magics and abilities for woeful purposes. The existence of such traitors seems to invoke great shame and ire in most all Celestials, and they will typically go out of their way to destroy such an abomination. I include this only for the sake of completeness and to point out that while the vast majority are stalwart agents for good, the mere fact that one is a Celestial does not guarantee that one is a good person."
- Captain Kara Ihtiras of the Demeyen Bishak delivered an impassioned plea, recognizing the importance of Unity in the cause of defeating these unholy threats. His Holiness the Patriarch expressed gratitude for her words, particularly coming from a Subject of the Caliphate, and expressed his personal desire for the same unity and love of all mankind, united as one spear against the Enemy that threatens all.
- (There passed an interlude of Applause and Agreement)
- The CELESTIALS Zyrial and Savarel reiterate their points regarding the Fallen, and stressing that the importance and purpose of their Descent is to combat these evils; the CELESTIAL Adiola agrees with them.
- (Some muttering is silenced by His Holy Highness, Prince-Bishop Tewdar)
- The RETURNED Stefan Angelus of the Targovishte delivered a statement.
- The CELESTIAL Elaine spoke, stating that most celestials do not believe that the Most Foul himself is currently alive, but that his lieutenants are attempting to resurrect him and that that must be stopped. She also offered an impromptu musical composition, entitled "Heavenly Warriors Standing Our Ground," which was permitted in spite of the irregularity of such an interlude in a Formal Assembly.
- His Highness, Crown Prince Caspar graciously thanked the CELESTIAL Elaine, and instructed the Throne Scribe to record and make available the words and melody. This done, the discussion commenced.
- Brother Elvin Preminger re-presents, at the request of the CELESTIALS, the Mark of the Fallen.
- (After some additional points along the same lines, His Holiness, the Patriarch, declares the subject finished, pending his deliberation. His Holy Highness Prince-Bishop Tewdar von Brezha called for the next topic.)
On The Canonization of Various Figures:
On the Matter of Immolo Karvonnen
- Sister Heidwig of Dunaldur repeated her testimony, and the accounts of her flock, which were Verified by Accuser Melkos.
- With permission from Bishop Viklos of Gaunt, Hakon Vidarrson of Gaunt indicated support for this plan on behalf of the Dane, and explained that he knew of several of the Dane's Bulwark who are interested in following the presumed Agio in fighting the Frozen Dead.
- Upon consideration and description of the Miracles in question, His Holiness the Patriarch Declared that these acts were not True Miracles of the Throne, but likely manifestations of some insidious magic, utilizing illusion to appear divine. He counseled that the Throne does not reveal itself in acts of might or destruction, and cannot be mistaken for Magic, nor in acts which divide and sow confusion, but in Unifying works, through the order of Society, and through Rulership.
- Brother Tobias Kindle, Squire of the Silver Swordsmen, delivered his testimony on behalf of Baron Hideg of Tarsikka. He described a text called Nidremar's Attestation of the Faith, which he dates from the First Age (thus Tharicia, as that part of the world was then known). The text speaks at length of the Miracles performed by Dalmied from the perspective of Nidremar, known as the "Just Queen"; and that through these miracles he did so ennoble her reign and that of her husband Shutemel, "The Blind King," leading them in the path of Unity, Service, and Community for their people, even in the darkness of the pre-Revelation world.
- Nikol Morhul recited his own testimony and that of Baron Hideg in support of Brother Kindle's.
- Upon consideration and description of the Miracles in question, His Holiness the Patriarch Declared that these acts were True Miracles of the Throne, illustrative of the work of the Throne's Will in the recognition and validation of Kingship, even in ancient days. By this measure, Dalmied stands up as a figure for Veneration, and his example should shine for all in supplication of the Throne. Further, Brother Tobias Kindle is named formal representative of the Bannermen in Marath Suvla, under the oversight of Matron Teora Kichernman of the Skattenmark.
On the Matter of Dalmied of Tharicia (Corrected from Tarsikka)
In SUPPLICATION before the THRONE; Brother Elvin Preminger of the RED HERALDS.
